Solo Challenge Game 3 - Canopy
For the third game in my solo challenge I chose the play the game Canopy. Designed by Tim Eisner, and published by Weird City Games. 2021
Canopy is primarily a two player game in which you compete to grow the most beautiful and diverse rainforest. You must grow tall trees, lush jungle plants, and attract wildlife.
The game is played over three seasons, and in each season players take turns selecting cards for their forest from one of three face down New Growth piles.
Starting with New Growth pile one you look at the pile, and decide whether to keep it or not. If you decide to keep it you add it to your forest, and if not you add another card to that pile from the current season deck, and then look at New Growth pile number two, and three repeating the same process.
At the end of each season players score points for completing trees, growing the tallest tree, and from sets of plants collected. At the end of three seasons the player with the most points wins the game.
In the solo game you play against the Forest Spirit who plays like your opponent in a two player game with slightly modified rules.
In the game I scored 86pts, and the Forest Spirit scored 76pts. It was a win that was mainly fuelled by my superior season one scoring.
It's an interesting solo system that although similar to the two player game presents somewhat different tactical challenge. The Forest Spirit always chooses the pile with the most card and while that means that it cannot be as strategic as as human opponent it seems to work, and consistently leads to high scores.
